The United Agency was founded in 1922 as a private stockholder agency. It was established to meet the needs of the business community and the citizens of Laurens. The agency was started by a group of local business leaders as an investment and to handle the insurance for several large local industries and their employees. Insurance products included auto insurance, homeowners insurance, and business insurance.

As Laurens, SC, has grown and changed, The United Agency has also grown, continuously adapting to the community’s evolving needs. In the early days, the agency included a savings and loan operation. Because it was located in an old bank, it even rented safe deposit boxes. Over time, the banking services were spun off due to new federal regulations separating banking and insurance. In the 1950s, the agency was very active in real estate sales and development.

Throughout its 80-year history, the agency has had only four managers!  They have provided consistent leadership and a stable environment for growth and expansion. L.C. Barksdale, Roy McDavid, Herbert Adams, and James Coleman are names that are forever connected to The United Agency as managers and community leaders. These men have been active in civic clubs, the chamber of commerce, Laurens Development Corporation, various youth and high school sports programs, city and county economic development projects, county government, and University of South Carolina Board of Trustees. All have been active in the State Association for Independent Insurance Agents.

When the associates of The United Agency are not busy helping the families and businesses of Laurens with car insurance, homeowners insurance, and business liability insurance, they are involved in the community. All have volunteered for schools, church, and community activities, and have a strong commitment to family.
